The Sweetness of Surrender
Up To Know Good on Thursday
October 05, 2006
There is a familiar story of a little girl who had a favorite faux pearl necklace. One day her daddy asked her to give him the necklace, but she refused. Honey, I love you. Please give the necklace to me, the dad requested repeatedly. Again and again, the girl firmly said, No! After a week of being asked everyday, with tears in her eyes, the little girl finally handed over her beloved play necklace to her dad. Immediately the father pulled a string of real pearls out of his pocket and put it around her neck.
Do Good - What are you holding onto that may be keeping you from the real thing? Take time to pray and ask God to reveal what He wants you to give to Him.
Like the dad in the story, God often needs to be persistent with me. For example, a few years after my first husband died, I had become so familiar with sadness that I didnt want to let it go. I found a strange familiarity in my grief that was comforting. Unfortunately, it was keeping me from experiencing new levels of joy in my life. Once I was willing to give God my sadness (and this happened at many different moments), He always quickly replaced it with a new sense of His love. A few months later, I also began dating my husband Myron. Im so thankful that I surrendered what was comfortable for the real love and joy of my Daddy.
Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. Psalm 126:5. Read more about God restoring our joy.
God, I sense that You are asking for something I love. I give it to You knowing that what You offer is more real and precious than what I can even imagine.
Know Good. Do Good. Feel Good.
I pray that you have a great day as you experience and express God's love in fresh, real ways!
