5 Secrets of A Happy Life
Up To Know Good on Thursday
October 26, 2006
Belinda and I sat at a table in Applebees. At eight years old, she was one of the wisest people I knew. When she was born, she was one of identical triplets, but tragically, her sisters were stillborn. As the only survivor, young Belinda was an old soul with a deep understanding of grief. Her quiet sympathy was a great comfort to me after the loss of my first husband. You know, she said as we sat at dinner, sometimes I see triplets on talk shows. Theyre fighting and havent talked to one another in years. I just want to tell those people, You need to get happy!
Do Good - If you are feeling down today, think about the choices you have to get happy. What can you do to move through your sadness? A walk? A phone call? A gesture of kindness to others? If you are feeling happy today, look for at least three opportunities to encourage others to feel the same.
I laughed at Belindas blunt remark, and I have often thought of it since. While grief and depression are real and difficult to overcome, we have choices about how to respond and move through our sadness. Will we reach out for help, comfort, and healing or will we withdraw into ourselves? Picking up the phone was one of the hardest things to do in the months after losing my husband. Would my friends care? Would my family understand? The answer was yes, and by reaching out through my sorrow to the love of those around me, I began to see that I would be happy. After some time, I realized that I was happy. Now, years later, I see that whatever mood Im in, daily God gives me a choice. Today, lets choose to get happy!
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:11. Click here to read this Psalm of sadness and the decision to hope.
God, thank You for the choice I have today to reach out to You and others today. By faith, I know that I can get happy!
Know Good. Do Good. Feel Good.
I pray that you have a great day as you experience and express God's love in fresh, real ways!
