The Present of Presence
Up To Know Good on Thursday
December 07, 2006
I met up with Andrea at our favorite coffee shop. It had been about a month since our last visit, and I was anxious to catch up with her. We sat down on a comfortable couch with our steaming hot drinks and began to talk. Nearly an hour later, I glanced at my watch, amazed that so much time had already passed. I asked how much longer she could stay, and we continued visiting for another thirty minutes. As we got up to leave, I felt connected and appreciated by my dear friend.
Do Good - Today, be a listener more than fifty percent of the time in each conversation you have.
As I drove back home, I reflected on the feeling of connection I had. I realized that the main reason I felt that way was because Andrea had listened to me. She turned her cell phone off when we sat down, made eye contact, nodded as I spoke, and offered advice to questions I had. Did I do the same for her? I wondered. I am a much better listener than I used to be, but I know I can be even better. When I meet with others, I want them to leave feeling appreciated and heard like I did that day.
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, James 1:19. Click here to read more.
Lord, I want to be a better listener. Help me to be even more aware of others in my conversations today.
Know Good. Do Good. Feel Good.
I pray that you have a great day as you experience and express God's love in fresh, real ways!
