First Bites
Up To Know Good
October 24, 2007

Kira looked tiny in her new highchair. She leaned to one side, small and uncomfortable, and completely unsure of why I kept pushing a spoon of mush into her mouth. Reflexively, she pushed out each little helping with her tongue onto her face.
It was day two of giving her "solid foods" - a few tablespoons of very runny rice cereal. Like the day before, Kira was crying, not wanting to be prodded with the spoon. To be sure I got the point, she turned her head to the side, looked away from me and whimpered.
I put my hand on her little shoulder and said with enthusiasm, "You're doing great, Honey. I'm so proud of you." With a few more encouraging statements, I put another spoonful in her mouth, and for the first time, she swallowed!
"Way to go, Sweetheart! That's it! You did it!" I gave her more, and she swallowed again. Kira looked at me and smiled. "I did it!" she said with her eyes. With a great deal of mom pride, I smiled back at her. Several months later, she now grins at the sight of the spoon and knows something yummy is coming.
I am more like Kira than I want to admit. Often God encourages me to take a taste of His goodness, and I resist. Even when I am hungry for something greater in my life, I'm hesitant to open myself up to new experiences and people.
Thankfully God is a Patient Parent who doesn't get upset. He simply puts His hand on my little shoulder and says, "You're doing great, Honey. I'm so proud of you." When I hear these loving words, I remember the last time I took a risk. Usually I have to smile because it turns out that when I finally do open up, something yummy comes my way.
"Taste and see that the Lord is good." Psalm 34:8. Click here to read my favorite Psalm. God, thank You for patiently encouraging us to taste, see and know how good You are. Give us courage to take risks and do good today.
